Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the Year 2000 Problem?

A: The Millennium or Year 2000 problem is the term used to describe the computer malfunctions expected to occur when the calendar flips from 1999 to 2000. In essence, many computer systems and software programs handle dates in YY/MM/DD format, with YY being the last two digits of the calendar year. Thus, computers treat 1950 as 50, 1997 as 97, and so on. Because the first two digits are omitted, many computers will process an incorrect date when the new century arrives.

Q: What can go wrong?

A: When a computer hardware or software application incorrectly processes the date, the result will be miscalculation for all date dependent applications. Any calculation involving dates can go awry. For example, January 1, 1900 was a Monday, but January 1, 2000 will be a Saturday. Computers may fail to display or print the correct date, cannot tell which of two dates comes first, misinterpret people’s ages, or miscalculate time intervals. These mistakes lead to errors in such things as interest rate calculations, credit card account information, delivery and billing dates, inventory control, and ticket reservations and issuance.

Q: Is there a Year 2000 Problem with Epson POS Products?

A: All TM Series Printers, Printer Mechanisms, DM Series Displays, Floppy Disk Drives, Optical Disk Drives and Zip Drives are Year 2000 Ready. These products do not contain an internal calendar and pose no Year 2000 issue. It should be noted that other parts of the computer system to which the peripheral device is attached, such as computer hardware, operating systems, or software applications, may not be Year 2000 ready. Users need to test this other equipment and contact the respective manufacturers of those products for more information. Epson expressly disclaims any warranty of non-Epson products used in conjunction with your Epson Systems Device products.

In addition, some of the IT/IM and NT Series intelligent terminals, and some EHT handheld terminals were engineered to process dates correctly and are also Year 2000 Ready. Models which are not Year 2000 Ready, can, in many cases, be made Year 2000 Ready with a BIOS upgrade to the current BIOS release version. Year 2000 Ready means the units are able to function correctly within and between the 20th and 21st centuries, provided that all other computer products used with them exchange accurate date information. However, each user’s environment is different from Epson’s test environment so users need to test and validate the Year 2000 readiness of their product. This information is provided without any warranties of any kind.

Q: What about the computer hardware and software that may be used with Epson products?

A: Your Epson Systems Device products may be connected to a system which includes other computer hardware, operating system, and/or software applications which may or may not be Year 2000 ready. Users need to test non-Epson products and contact their respective manufacturers and distributors for more information on their Year 2000 Readiness. You may also want to visit the web sites of the various computer hardware and software application vendors. Epson expressly disclaims any warranty of the Year 2000 Readiness of non-Epson products used in conjunction with your Epson Systems Device products.
